Sociology 2233 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Social Comparison Theory
Document Summary
Week 8: self-knowledge and the need to maintain self-esteem. What is the self: the self is a conflict between selfish impulses and social conscience, the self needs both to take care of itself and to override selfish impulses for the good of society. Looking inward on the private aspects of the self, including emotions, thoughts, desires, and traits. Looking outward on the public aspects of the self that others can see and evaluate. Three components to looking-glass self: the image of how others see you, the image of how others will judge you, the emotional response to the potential judgement. Introspection is the process by which a person examines the contents of his or her mind and mental states. Introspection involves the deliberate mind, so it may be true that we do not know what the automatic processes of the duplex mind are up to.
