Each psychosocial phase is characterized by a unique tension between: its phase-specific cognitive developmental requirement and the capacity of more salient environments to encourage, meet and properly respond to it"s (a particular phase) emerging cognitive developmental competency. At phase 1, the enviro must support the development of hope. Ego: synthetic, executive functions- controls emotions, behaviour, cognition. Ego strength: is the strength of the egos synthetic and executive functions. Virtue: strength of egos synthetic and executive functions at the syntonic (+) resolution of a phase. Bc there can never be an exact correspondence between an individual need and the environment ability to satisfy those needs. Each phase is unique bc each one makes a unique contribution to overall ego or personality development. Epigenetics development or ego development requires 2 things.
