Cognitive theory: human development is about the development of cognitive operations. Habermas will look at the comparable theories between erikson and piaget/kohlberg. You will never find a person who has complete trust or mistrust in the environment. You want a mild balance between the two. One that challenges us in degrees that we are able to handle: an encouraging environment. Think of vgotsky"s zone of proximal interest: it requires the actualization of all earlier potentials. What importance does erikson ascribe to culture/social environment. Cultures are responsible for providing their citizens with a series of interrelated increasingly complex social tasks and interactive requirements if the epigenetic potential of each person is to have the opportunity to be actualized.
