Sociology 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Flans, Xenophobia, Marilyn Frye
Document Summary
A person"s skin colour, or last name has no real consequence on one"s social behavior. Physical characteristics have no consequence upon social behavior, until they become socially defined. One"s background can be a signal for some to put one in an arbitrary social category. Ethnicity and race are called arbitrary social categories. No scientifically sound theories to indicate that behaviour or personality characteristics can be attributed to race. No scientific merit in interpreting behaviour based on physical traits. Racialization: where race becomes a socially constructed category: all about labelling. A category composed of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of a society deem socially important. Classifications of these categories are meaningless: intradiversity is much greater than interdiversity. A shared cultural heritage: cultural traits. Ethnic group: cultural unit based on 4 factors, group of people, shared cultural traits, high level of interactions, regard themselves and are regarded by others.
