Gender studies explores the ways gender impacts not only our day-to-day lives but also social institutions. Sex: anatomical or biological characteristics of women and men: primary sex characteristics (organs used for reproduction, genitals, and secondary sex characteristics (bodily differences that distinguish biologically mature males and females, chromosomes and hormones) Gender: refers to the roles and characteristics society assigns to women and men. Intersex: when one is born with both male and female sex characteristics. Gender roles: set of attitudes and expectations concerning behaviour that relates to being female or male. Cisgender: when one strongly identi es with the gender roles associated with one"s biological sex. Transgender: when one"s gender identity and behaviour do not conform to the gender role associated with their biological sex. Gender strati cation - the unequal distribution of wealth, power, and privilege between men and women: there are more differences within the categories then between them.
