Race: a social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers, usually with profound effects on their lives. Not biologically important, it is socially important. Race matters because it allows social inequality to be created and perpetuated. Race can be used to make a person or group a scapegoat, which is a disadvantaged person or category of problems that others blame for their own problems. Six degrees of separation: types of ethnic and racial group relations. Used to make diversity a natural part of canadian history and landscape. Toted as a social ideal to be achieved. Diversity is also seen as a problem that needs to be solved. Race is to biology as ethnicity is to culture. Ethnic group: comprised of people whose perceived cultural markers are deemed socially signi cant. Ethnic groups differ from one another in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors, and so on.
