Sociolog 1020 lesson 10 race and ethnicity. Race: social construct that we use to distinguish people based on real or imagined characteristics characteristics tend to be physical in nature. Race matters because it allows social inequality to be created & perpetuated. Some biologists & social scientists suggest we drop the term race from the vocabulary of science due to the fact that it perpetuates social inequality. Racial & ethnic inequality is more deeply rooted in social structure than in biology & culture. Philippe rushton (main campus prof. western) argued that he had come up with a hierarchy of races; asians at the top, white black. Made racist claims & claimed that there is a hierarchy of races based on brain size, iq tests & penis sizes (highly biased & very racist) Sociobiologists: social factors are more influential than biological factors; stereotypes. Prejudice: attitude that judges a person on his or her group"s real or imagined characteristics.
