Document Summary

Originally began with ontario workman"s compensation act in 1914. Act based on analysis of american, german & other european laws. Retained principles set forth in ontario act 1914: collective liability for employers, compensation regardless of financial condition of employer, compensation based on loss of earnings, no fault system, nonadversarial process: little or no resource to the courts. Collective liability: all employers in a class or other rate group are liable for the costs of any or all accidents & occupational diseases that occur in the operations of those employers. Industries classified by their size & end product. Each employer is assessed a rate of percentage of its payroll. Percentage determined by injury cost of its classification. Each province has its own workers compensation board. Aim to assist injured workers financially until able to return to work. Try to get individuals back to work as soon as possible. Faster people get back to work, the better their recovery.
