Document Summary
At first, the ego only has to worry about external reality. Over time, superego is making demands as well. Superego is beginning to control ego by giving rewards for compliance: pride. Note: difficult position of ego, id and superego are often in conflict. Id and superego are infantile, formed when child was young. Superego is irrational and blind, just following do"s and don"ts. If ego obeys superego: id may not be satisfied. If ego follows id: superego may punish. Only small portion is on the surface and this is conscious and the rest is under the surface which is unconscious. Ego has both conscious and unconscious portion. Interaction of id, ego and superego results in constant struggle. Reality anxiety: fear of real world threats. Neurotic anxiety: fear of id"s desires. How: if threat is in real world, flee and avoid, rational move by ego. For id, thinking and doing are the same thing.
