Document Summary

At first, the ego only has to worry about external realist. Over time, superego starts making demands as well. Superego is beginning to control ego by giving rewards for compliance. Id and superego are often in conflict. Egp needs to come up with a solution that satisfied both. Note: both id and superego are infantile (formed with child is young) Id is unreasoning (can"t reason with id) Superego is irrational (as if it is an authority figure telling you that you can"t do something just because you can"t) Binds to anything other than do"s and don"ts. Interaction of id, superego and ego results in constant conflict. Ego is good at deflecting reality anxiety. Able to provide rational explanations and convince id to stop. However anxiety generated from within is harder to deal with. For id, thinking and doing are the same. Devote some mental energy to keep thought (memories, feelings, etc. ) out of awareness.
