Bartering, buying, and selling is secondary to people producing for subsistence. Markets may be where you went once a month to acquire a particularly rare or strange good: ex: spices, silk, etc. These societies were no kind of utopia in terms of equality. Often characterized by nasty relations of social domination. Ruling classes extract wealth by force, fear & tradition. The idea of political economy originated in a major change in the nature of society which took several hundred years to work itself through. For most of us, this idea is hard to wrap our heads around much different life than ours today.
