Wet plate collodian process, 1850s multiple prints from single glass negative very long process. Part of what made the wet collodian process difficult was because you had to have all these chemicals. Dry plate made it more mobile, no more portable darkrooms, now you had photos of remote areas and stuff. First type of photography that became popular. It was believed once character could be shown through a photograph. Not random shots, moved around and stuff to portray nationshood. Backdrop was simple to emphasize on the figure. Another generation after, middle class people could afford to get portraits done of them. Photo as keepsake of deceased sleeping subject . A lot of people would die before they could get a portrait done. Thinking was how are we gonna remember this person? . They get a photograph of them to remember, a keepsake of the deceased is another common feature of photography.
