Daguerreotype, 1839: louis daguerre, unique image: unable to make muliple copies of a photo. Many photos were printed on a un reproducible medium that made it nearly impossible or very hard to reproduce. Wet plate collodion process, 1850s: made it possible for the mass prining and disseminaion of photography, was labor intensive and un eicient. Consisted of heavy equipment that was bulky and hard to transport. There needs to a mastery of chemicals and producion. Many civil war photos required a portable dark room in the batleield. George dawson , geological survey of canada : you saw more travel photography and nature photos. Without the use of chemicals photos were able to be developed with less of an efort. Photographed many famous people at the ime, generals, writers, poliicians: eg. When brady was taking these portraits he wanted to capture naionalisic values. He believed that character could be captured in a photograph.
