Document Summary

Identify the 3 major subdivisions of the brainstem and describe the anatomic relationships of the major motor and sensory nuclei and the major descending and ascending tracts in the brainstem. Know the main structure and connections of the cerebellum. Midbrain can see cerebral aqueduct running through it. Pons is large structure on anterior/ventral surface. Cerebellum is not part of brainstem but it is derived from same structure as pons. Olfactory tract for smell is misleading, it doesn"t terminate in hypothalamus, it comes close to it, but it mostly terminates in the uncus in the temporal lobe. Optic chiasm where info from optic nerves (retina) is crossing, blocks a lot of the hypothalamus. Cerebral peduncles are framed by the optic tract peduncles = feet. Large bundles of fibers carrying info from cerebral cortex. Cerebral peduncle is continuation of the internal capsule; these fibers still continue down and terminate in the brainstem, then keep going to terminate in the spinal cord.
