SOC203H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Georg Simmel, Anomie, Preppy
Document Summary
Park has a four- part theoretical construct : contact, conflict, accommodation, assimilation. He conceptualizes the idea of a marginal guy (a man that is caught in two cultures) Simmel never directly talk about race or inequality, revolution, structural relationship, yet he influences people in thinking about these topics. Simmel focuses on idea and mundane/ social constructs like conflicts. In groups of three, many more things are possible. Things that are possible in groups of 3, they are also possible in larger groups. In a group of 3, an authority figure can emerge more dominance, higher inequality. Micro level (does not think that society exists as macro- level structures; rather he argues that society is recreated at the micro-level through the production of social forms) Simmel focuses on interaction between structures and their effects on people. He is interested in objective culture: alien force that has the ability to affect us.
