Humans have capacity for language due to human genetics; we have built in genetic biological ability to use complex language > nativeness perspective. Behaviourist perspective > b. f. skinner that said we dont have built in perspective; the built in perspective is due to social environment we involved in (ie. interacting with humans); Capacity for language due to environment (behaviourist) vs genetics (nativeness) Sensitive period for language when different language systems sensitive to type of info > when window passes, becomes more difficult to pick up partiuclar skill, in particular language. Sapir-whorf hypothesis (linguistive determinism) > idea that in extreme form, our language determines our thought; if some concept doesnt exist in language, then incapable of having the thought; very little evidence. Linguistic relativism > doesn"t determine thought but has an effect. Different descriptors for general concept of key if it happened to be masculine or feminine. Vast majority, left hemisphere is important for language comprehension and production.
