Neville moray built on cherry"s work and found that people could notice changes in the physical properties such as loudness but could not pick up on even simple meaningful messages in the unattended message. Small number of words repeated multiple times were not reported by participants. So broadbent postulated that attention works after basic physical features are detected, but prior to meaningful features. Broadbent and his colleagues proposed an early selection view of attention. Early selection is the theory that attention works early on in perceptual processing, before the stimulus has begun being processed for meaning. The cocktail party effect: at a cocktail party while listening carefully to one conversation you will suddenly hear your name when it is uttered in another conversation. Moray found that participants could notice their name being spoken. He concluded that it is probably only material important to the subject that will break through the (bottleneck) barrier.
