Document Summary
Psy100 lecture 5 feb 5 (cocktail party effect is different from cocktail phenomenon) But people could pick on physical changes, but not on meaning. Attention works after basic physical features are detected but prior to meaningful features. Works very early on, blocks things relevant before they can become meaningful. Early selection view: early on, screening it off (not physical properties) meaningful properties. Cocktail party effect: you suddenly hear your name being uttered in another conversation (not being shouted out loud) when you screen off the surrounding sounds. The only differences i can pick off are physical changes, and all other irrelevant properties being shut off. It is (cid:862)(cid:373)ate(cid:396)ial (cid:858)i(cid:373)po(cid:396)ta(cid:374)t(cid:859) to the su(cid:271)je(cid:272)t that (cid:449)ill (cid:271)(cid:396)eak th(cid:396)ough the [(cid:271)ottle(cid:374)e(cid:272)k] (cid:271)a(cid:396)(cid:396)ie(cid:396)(cid:863) Meaningful to you/important to you vs. selection theory. Attention is filtered after meaning is processed. Not as simple as filter meaningful stuff is filtered. Late selection view attention selects information after it has been processed as meaningful.
