Document Summary

Origins of h: preventing acidosis - buffer systems, bicarbonate, acid-base balance, and the kidney, bicarbonate regeneration, excreting hydrogen and ammonium. Electrolyte and water balance (kidney) lecture 7/8: midterm next wednesday, 2:10pm - locations on blackboard. Case of the day: dialysis and diarrhea: 45 yo male, end stage kidney disease (no kidney function with dialysis) 3x/wk. Weekend had stomach flu and diarrhea (rich in bicarbonate) Skipped dialysis on monday bc felt unwell. Comatose by morning evening, presented with following: Pt on dialysis has no function of kidneys and thus no function to regen bicarbonate. Kidney normally would rapidly respond to such a loss. This leads to lowering of ph which is dangerous to the individual - coma. Failure to hyperventilate in resp to metabolic acidosis - should"ve made ph lower. If present, will need immediate hemodialysis to restore bicarbonate levels. Lecture notes: acid and base balance ph review.
