Document Summary

Purpose of this video: scientists are hunting for new antibiotics because the one we currently have are failing . The motivation of their study is to see whether niche environments like this can yield new classes of compounds for antibiotic development. Chemists have had little success in making synthetic antibiotics which is why they"re looking in the nature. They now go off the coast of panama and look at marine sediments and try to analyze the microorganisms living in those sediments. They chose panama because it has high biodiversity high biodiversity means that there is a lot of competition between organisms and this competition is what helps create these bioactive molecules that they can use for antibiotics. The microbe"s weapons they use to battle each other for territory that can serve us for antibiotics. A post-antibiotic era in which common infections and minor injuries can kill is a very real possibility for the 21st century .
