E. g. , metrics, measures, representations are always forms of simplification; take complex reality and try to reduce it to something simple. Commensurate: to express two different things in terms of a common measure or metric. Might systemic representations of nature actually produce nature both materially and symbolically. Robbins (2001): fixed categories in a portable landscape. Provides an account of the complex interplay of interest, representation and classification of landscapes, the technologies of measurement, and the production of environmental transformations tied to the institutional sanction of (ostensibly) objective forms of representation. Foresters and local land users define forest cover differently. Environmental knowledge, at least in the case of the indian forest department, is tied to the production and reproduction of institutional authority to manage.
