Document Summary
Focus: examines the history of public land management as directed by government officials in alberta from 1930 to 2009. Language is a way of constructing the terms and rules of engagement - a tool for sustaining natural systems, & orients how humans think & behave towards nature & each other. Of the 661, 848 of alberta land, ~60% is public land. We will focus on 4 time periods: 1930-49, 1950-79, 1980-2001, and 2002-9, which is claimed by. Ball and forbes, to correspond to significant socio-political shifts in the approaches taken by the governments for managing public lands in alberta. Understand how socio-political, cultural, economic, and ecological events influence both transitions and continuances in public land management policy. Use cultural landscape theory and new mobilities research as lenses to view evolution of the approaches taken to managing public lands and to highlight the kinds of rural landscapes that they produce both materially and symbolically.
