Exists in both hb (four) and mb (one) Has a central ion in the middle - fe2+ - this is the ferrous state. Without the iron is shown on the left. Makes four connections to the n of the ring. Oxygen can bind in this state, but not the fe3+ state. Composed of 4 pyrrole rings linked by methene bonds. Iron interacts with six ligands in hb and mb. Four of these are the n atoms of the porphyrin.
