Document Summary
** we need more cancer researchers and more cancer research funding; cancer statistics haven"t changed since 2011 ** 40-45% of canadians will develop cancer during their lifetimes; canadians will die from cancer. To understand cancer, we must understand what leads to cancer at the levels of cells and molecules; cancer normally progresses due to defects in the molecular machinery and regulatory mechanisms that control cell shapes, functions, interactions and numbers. Growth factor receptors (eg. receptor tyrosine kinases) and uncontrolled ras and myc signaling. Oncogenes and tumour suppressors often function in the same pathway. Clonal origin of cancer tumours come from a single cell that gains some advantageous mutation. Uncontrolled growth from a single cell can form a deadly tumour in less than 40 cell doublings. ~27 doublings first visible on x-rays. ~29 doublings first palpable (ie. we can feel it)
