Document Summary

The graph eventually reaches a plateau when the rate has been maximized (the graph indicates that the benefit is the transmission and as the replication rate increases the benefit which is the transmission) The costs of virulence are higher if the disease is directly transmitted: lower parasite densities and lower parasite effects as you get older, there is a positive correlation between within host replication and mortality rate for virulence. Increased replication rate has a benefit and a cost. The cost is the increase of the virulence cost. They are good because they have multiple genotype for the parasites. You can track the parasite density over time. There is a lot of variation between genotypes of the parasites. Some of the parasites lead to severe disease and some lead to mild disease in the host. The more virulent make up the most amount of the parasites in the infections. Fitness is lower in multiple than single strains.
