Document Summary

There are many different intracellular compartments, each with different functions. Refer to slide 2: this chart distribution is based on a liver cell: the cytosol occupies the largest volume of the cell almost half of the cell volume! It is the site at which protein synthesis starts and also, where the degradation of proteins occurs. Intermediary metabolism also occurs here it is the degradation and synthesis of small molecules. It is the location where dna is transcribed and replicated. It is a specific compartment within the nucleus where rrnas are transcribed. It has a different appearance than the rest of the nucleus: centrosomes. They have an important role in organizing the cytoskeleton. The diagram on slide 4 is of a polarized epithelial cell, which means that the apical domain is different from the basal domain. Up in the apical domain, there are villi whereas the basal domain is flat.
