Document Summary

Bio130 lecture 17: intracellular compartments and protein sorting. Location of intermediary metabolism (degradation and synthesis of small molecules: e. g. glycolysis: break down of glucose. A subcellular compartment or large macromolecular complex, often membrane-enclosed, that has a distinct structure, composition, and function. Rough er: synthesis of transmembrane, organelle, and secreted proteins. Rough er: extended network of tubules, contains a lot of membrane surface area. Differ in complement of rough and smooth er. Smooth er: liver has large percentage, pancreatic has very little. Occurs mainly in liver, liver hepatocytes to a lot of this detoxification. Rough er: pancreatic has large percentage, almost all of its er. Make a lot of secreted proteins (exocytosed), produced at rough er by ribosomes. Cells have same organelles in different amounts, related to function. Together, these organelles form the endomembrane system (endo = inside the cell) All function together and rely on each other.
