Document Summary

Quality control: ef: elongation factor, ef-tu in prokaryotes, ef1a/ef1 in eukaryotes. Ef-tu binds to gtp and then to trna. Checks for the right amino acid on trna. If everything is correct, ef-tu cuts gtp to gdp. Binds to gtp and helps small ribosomal subunit move forward using the energy released from gtp gdp: role of elongation factors: Mediated by the release of ef-tu (binds aminoacyl-trna), ef-g (helps ratchet fwd 1 codon), and gtp hydrolysis. Ribozymes: rna molecules that possess catalytic activity, ribosome not entirely made up of rna (2/3 rna to 1/3 protein, condensation reaction carried out by ribosome. Initiation of translation: prokaryotes: shine-dalgarno sequence and multiple sites of initiation. Small ribosome subunit recognizes shine-dalgarno sequence (upstream before start codon) Large subunit binds: eukaryotes: no shine-dalgarno sequence, mrna forms a loop. Small ribosome subunit with initiation trna form before mrna binds.
