Document Summary

There is no universal definition on species as no strict definition can be applied to all organisms. Biological: genetic differentiation between population that cannot interbreed. Ernst mayr the first scientists to define and promote the biological species concept. A species is first separated by geographical barrier that limits gene flow. After a long period of time, when they come into contact again by migration. The individuals cannot interbreed and become two different species. More common in plants but rare in animals. There is a barrier in gene flow and cause divergence within a range of species. Where one species is the ancestor of another species. Cause prevention of species from ultimately producing fertile offspring: premating isolation. An example is the apple maggot flies, mutation occurs due to the introduction of domesticated apples and shift the flies to new resources. That leads to phonological differences in the flies and reduction in gene flow.
