Document Summary

Ast101- lecture 14- formation of the solar system. Our solar system: planets orbit the sun, all the planets orbit in the same direction (prograde, venus and uranus rotate the opposite the way, most of the moons of the planets orbit their planets in the same direction. The nebular hypothesis: knew that nebulas existed in space, cloud of gas and dust, all of space is not quite empty, theory went out of favour in early 20th century. A cloud of gas and dust and gravity causes it to collapse. A cloud collapses: telescopes show that protostars do have disks around them, the dark regions are the dusty disk blocking out the light from behind them, the bright thing in the middle is the new star. The frost line: the disk is made up of mostly hydrogen, the inner disk is warmer than the outer disk because it is closer to the sun. Earth which brings water and the earth"s atmosphere.
