Document Summary
Animal physiology lecture 8 transporters, channels and osmosis. Homeostasis and equilibrium are not the same. equilibrium prevents change in the physical body while homeostasis strives to balance out the external environment state with the internal body. Selective permeability is the allowing of certain molecules in the cell. The reason of selectivity is because cell membrane has hydrophilic and hydrophobic bilayer that prevent them from going through, so there are channels that allow some certain molecules in the cell; hence the selective permeability. There are four types of gated channel that allow the opening of the cellular membrane. In the voltage-gated channel; when the positive charge is in the extracellular fluid and the negative charge is in the cytoplasm, it is in the negative direction. Cells move towards equilibrium when the cell is open in its membrane. The na+ -k+ atpase pump is very important in making a cell equilibrium.
