Socialization: the process by which people learn culture, roles. Behaviour expected of a person occupying a particular position in society. Formation of self: a sense of individual identity, in relation to others. Primary socialization: mastering basic skills required for society, family. Secondary socialization: outside of the family, education, peers, media. Increasingly responsible for socialization: hidden curriculum, merit, deference, punctuality, competition, symbolic interactionism. Individuals of similar age and status: separation from family, independent identity, rejection, rebellion, discord, lifestyle parental values, experiment with new elements, rebellion. Mass media: fastest growing, most engaged, self-socialization, gender roles. Set of behaviours associated with widely shared expectations about how genders should act. Resocialization: when powerful socialization agents deliberately cause rapid change in, segregation from old status, degradation/disorientation, acceptance of people"s values, roles, and self-conception. Total institutions: setting in which people are isolated from the larger society, under strict control and supervision, dress, behaviour, interactions, functions, time, space.
