Document Summary

Chapter 2: tectonics and hazards; earth as a planet - september 25, 2015. There are 2 types of seismic waves: p-wave (primary waves): faster, come first (ex: act like a traffic jam, space in between is alternating, compressing and expanding, s-wave (secondary/ sheer waves): slower, come after. Asthenosphere is within mantle, near the melting point. Crust- there are 2 main types of crust: oceanic : thinner, more dense, most common rock in the solar system, continental crust: less dense, more thick. Hot rock (low density) rises from depth and cool rock (high density) sinks from the surface convection. Hot, mobile mantle +thin, cool, brittle lithosphere -> breaks into plates. Convection: boiled water example- occurs to solid rock within the mantle, inner &outer core. Conduction: expands and rises (pan or hot skillet example) Intra (meaning within) : middle of a plate, quiet regarding geological activity.
