The energy travels in 2 ways: p. wave (compressional wave) faster, primary wave to hit a seismic station, s. wave (shear waves) - moves like an s, think of the in-class rope analogy. S waves can be refracted or blocked by outer core. S waves cannot travel through liquid; only solid, p waves can travel through solid and liquid. Made of dense rock (not as dense as core) A system is a portion of the universe that can be separated from the rest, for the purpose of studying changes occurring within it, under changing conditions. (also organized identity made up of interrelated and interdependent part) A system could be anything, could be whole solar system, a rock, the universe. It could even be a network of relationships, both inside and outside of system"s boundaries. Example: a leaf is a system of a bigger system of a tree, of a bigger system of a forest.
