Not focused on type of device but on different ways of interacting when people are far away from the home or office. Earlier worked showed distinction b/w mobile and portable. Now its about mobile new media not just smartphones/mobile phones. Walkie talkie developed but limited capacity and unreliable for calls. Radio interference problems emerged and world radio congress settled disputes. Solution of too many people and too little capacity was solved by cellular radio systems. They were deliberately low powered; many little towers, and radio frequencies could be reused. First phone or the brick was analogue but expensive, heavy, bad battery life. Digital cellphones were smaller, cheaper and used less power. At first phones just called and only feature was caller id. Texting developed when companies wanted to send users a message about a new voicemail. Texting required memory, processing power, and an input device with display. Games also developed (nokia first game called snake )
