Mobile phones and how they have evolved throughout the years: from just calling devices into smartphones. Type of mobile phone: distinct from portable phone. Reads email, takes pictures, views the internet. Mobile = could be used while user was moving. Portable = could not be mobile when connected to network: ex. Cellular radio system design: hexagonal with radio towers. Infrastructure as something invisible that allows for usage of something else. Cell towers as low powered, many more: contrast to radio towers, one huge tower to cover massive area. Connect to one tower, while ignoring others. Initially was to notify users of voicemails: allowing users to initiate sms was an afterthought. Smartphones had processing power: tiny computers of the 1990s enabled sms. Multiplexing: subdivide electromagnetic signal, allows more usable space/capacity within the signal. 2g vs. 3g vs. 4g vs. lte: lte as enhancement of 4g.
