Document Summary

Minerals are inorganic substances that dissociate in body luids to form ions called electrolytes. Because cells have a plasma membrane, and acive transport occurs at the membrane surface, cells are able to maintain internal environments quite disinct from that of the ecf. Fluid balance is when water content remains stable over ime. Water sources: primarily in digesive tract -food, liquids, and metabolic processes. Water losses: most through urinaion, evaporaion, feces. Fluid shit: rapid water movement between ecf and icf response to osmoic gradient. Important factor when water intake is restricted but water losses are severe. Water loss in ecf makes ecf hypertonic with respect to icf. Corrected by water shit from icf to ecf (ecf volume increased but icr volume decreased) Dehydraion occurs when water losses outpace water gains. When you lose water but retain electrolytes, the osmoic concentraion of ecf increases. Osmosis then moves water out of the icf to the ecf unil both are isotonic.
