Document Summary

Lecture 8 : 13. 5 & 13. 6 & cr. Genetic polymorphism: polymorphic traits: more than 2 distinct phenotypes are present in a population due to multiple alleles of the same gene. (example: b globin: trait o2 carrying capacity) Incomplete domniance: heterozygotes have an intermediate phenotype since alleles of a gene are not always clearly dominant or recessive. Example: colour in 4oclock flowers: p1 rr (purple) x rr (white) f1 (lavendar) f2: 1:2:1 pheno&genotype. : flower colour is controlled by a single gene w/ 2 alleles (r and r). Because r codes for pigment production, it is the allele responsible for intermediate colour. rr-lack pigment note: expected 3:1 pheno ratio & 1:2:1 genotype, and purple in f1. Example: snapdragons: (red x white) --> f1= pink x pink --> 1/4r 1/p 1/4 w & pxw= 1/2 pink&1/2 white. Codominance: heterozygotes have a phenotype that is combination of that of 2 homozygotes.
