Document Summary

Distribution of identical material, dna, to two daughter cells. Cell division is what enables the continuity of life. In prokaryotic cells: cell division results in reproduction (production of another cell or another organism). Why cell division occurs: when you skin your knee, cell divides to replace old, dead and damaged cells, cells divide so living things can occur. When organisms grow, it isn"t because cells are getting large, it is because cells are dividing to produce more and more cells. In human bodies, nearly two trillion cells divide every day! Prokaryotes have a simple cell cycle: in bacteria, dna is in a single circular chromosome, located in the nucleoid region, dna replication: Cell elongates, splits into two daughter cells. Division by binary fission: reproduction may stop under adverse nutritional conditions. A) reproduction- amoeba (single celled organisms): simple eukaryotic organisms that move in a characteristic crawling fashion. Results in genetically identical daughter cells (you want the exact same cell!
