What is a social group? cluster of people beyond domestic unit/not related by kinship two kinds of social groups: primary and secondary. Informal relationship, usually voluntary, based on similarity, occurs between equals. Related to microcultural factors such as gender, age, class, institutions, religion, etc. Exchange of stories and information creates bonds and strengthens the friendship. Define membership through sense of shared identity and objectives, provide support. Fraternities and sororities: selective, initiation process, social functions. Formed by people outside of mainstream society, people who resist conformity. Still identify as a group with similar ideals, may have initiations or identity markers. Examples: hippies of the 60s, hipsters of the 2000s, body modification groups. Youth gangs live in urban areas, social problem, initiation rituals and membership symbols.
