Chapter 12: emotions: complex psychological processes with 3 components, physiological arousal (ex. Heart beating fast = scared: subjective experience (ex. I feel scared , conscious of thoughts and feelings: behavioural activation (ex. Running away when scared: can be adaptive or maladaptive (fear = alive or sad= suicide, emotions have 2 dimensions, valence: how pleasant or unpleasant emotion is, arousal: which one is stronger, theory of emotions, the james-lange theory. You feel based on your physical arousal: the cannon-bart theory. We feel emotions and physical arousal simultaneously: schachter"s theory. To experience emotion, 2 factors must be present: Cognitive label on emotion (brain identifies emotion, situation clues you in) Spill over effect: physical arousal from situation a will transfer to b: cognition and emotions, cognitive theory. Emotions and feelings are how we think (if anxious, change the way we think) Zajonc: some of our reactions (mostly fear and dislike) act without. Positive emotions: left frontal lobe: expressed emotions.
