Document Summary
9 theories of play: how play is caused, assumptions of each theory. Surplus energy theory (cid:862)play is caused by the existence of energy surplus to the needs of sur(cid:448)i(cid:448)al. : assumptions: Energy is produced at a constant rate. Its expenditure is made on overt behaviour (which is play) Instinct theory (cid:862)pla(cid:455) is (cid:272)aused (cid:271)(cid:455) the inheritance of unlearnt capacities to e(cid:373)it playful a(cid:272)ts. : assumptions: The determinants of our behaviour are inherited in the same way that we inherit a genetic code which determines our structure. Preparation theory (cid:862)pla(cid:455) is (cid:272)aused (cid:271)(cid:455) the efforts of the player to prepare for later life. : assumptions: Play is emitted only by persons preparing for new ways of responding. The player is instinctively prepared for responses that will be critical later. The instincts governing this are inherited imperfectly and youth is the period during which these imperfectly inherited mechanisms are perfected.
