Chapter 11 motivation and emotion: motivation, process that influences goal-directed behaviour. Instinct inherited predisposition to behave in a specific way when exposed to particular stimuli. Instinct theory instincts motivate much behaviour: modern evolutionary psychology, adaptive significance- motivation to engage in survival promoting behaviour. Incentives represent environmental stimuli that pull an organism towards a goal: ex. Intrinsic motivation: performing an activity for its own sake because it"s enjoyable, overjustification hypothesis, giving extrinsic rewards to perform activities that they intrinsically enjoy may over justify the behaviour and reduce intrinsic motivation. It will change from play to work if given extrinsic rewards. People are most fulfilled in their lives when they are able to satisfying these needs: competence: reflects a human need to master new challenges and perfect skills. Adam khimji (lectures in red: autonomy (or self-determination): satisfied when people experience actions as a result of free choice without outside interference, relatedness: our desire to form meaningful bonds with others.
