A slower rate will give less (but larger) crystals while a faster rate will have the opposite effect. The crystals can be seen without the help of a microscope. The crystals are microscopic and may contain holes. The large ones are stuck in the matrix (groundmass) of the smaller ones because of two different rates of cooling. Glassy: there"s no crystal visible (obsidian and pumice). It has a fast rate of cooling and a high gas concentration.
