We are not necessarily manipulated by those devices though. It"s used to influence an audience and further an agenda often by presenting facts selectively, to encourage a particular perception. Or using loaded language, buzzwords, to produce an emotional rather than rational response. In the 20th century, the term propaganda has been associated with a manipulative approach. It used to be neutral descriptor beforehand: a wide range of materials and media are used for conveying propaganda, which changed when new technology was invented.
