Document Summary

Long term potentiation: depolarization of post synaptic cell kicks out magnesium ion in nmda receptor which is blocking it. Calcium is an important ion in that once depolarization kicks out the mg ion, calcium can get through the nmda receptor. Nmda receptors are more permeable to calcium than non-nmda. End result of all of this is an increased post-synaptic expression on the non- Nmda receptor, which means there"s more receptors for glutamate to bind to, and this causes greater depolarizations. Gene regulatory mechanism called creb involved in this pathway. Receptor is coupled to gtp binding proteins, together it is gpcr. G protein is a tethered protein on the inside of the cell. Gpcrs are also called metabotropic receptor, to differentiate from ionotropic receptors. Metabotropic receptors aren"t directly ion channels, but they might modulate/lead to phosphorylation of an ion channel. Because they do this, they can mediate a wide range of pathways.
