Document Summary

Phylum anthophyta (or flowering plants) are the largest phylum of the plantae. They have been around since body fossils (350 million years ago) and have dominated the earth around 100 million years ago. It is mycoheterotrophy (no chlorophyll and does not photosynthesise. It lives off of a fungus and undergoes symbiosis. The fungus is getting photosynthates (ex. sugars) from the plant. ) How ophrys repopulate: they tend to trick male bees and wasps to populate with the flowers. Once the insect comes in contact with the flower, the pollen attaches to them and when the bees go visit other flowers, the pollen interacts with the seeds and the pollination takes place. How coryanthes undergo pollination: the orchids in the tropics attract male bees by producing a pheromone that attracts females. The male bees go to the orchids and rub its smell all over it, and this smell attracts the female bees.
