Proteins, are the mosaic in the fluid mosaic model. they are studded into the membrane. Proteins are responsible for the specific work of the membrane. If membrane is heavily involved in the transport of solutes, thats due to membrane carriers, pumps or channels. Membranes are also involved in reactions that require enzymes; and so you find enzymes attached to membranes. (i. e. electron transport chain) Signal reception, membrane proteins are responsible for detecting a signal transducing a cellular response. Membrane proteins are involved in attachment, either within a cell, or extracellular structures that surround it (involved in anchorage) More commonly they go right across the membrane, they have hydrophilic and hydrophobic components (amphipathic) Single pass transmembrane protein, is when just one goes straight through. Multipass transmembrane protein, where there are numerous pieces going through the membrane. Transmembrane domain (usually 20 amino acids long) they are typically hydrophobic, and adopt alpha helix composition.
