Document Summary

Lecture 7: name the three types of lipids, their composition, and give examples. There are three types of lipids: simple lipids, complex lipids, and neutral lipids. How are they classified (2 general methods), go into the three subcategories for each type. What happens when there are 2 consecutive double bonds? a fatty acid is a carboxylic acid (cooh) with a long aliphatic chain. they are classified according to 2 general methods: # of carbons and the # of double bonds. # of carbons = short (4-6), medium (6-12) and long (> 14). and for the number of double bonds: saturated (no double bonds), unsaturated (1 double bond) and polyunsaturated (multiple double bonds). 2 consecutive double bonds are usually not conjugated but separated by one carbon: be able to name fatty acids. Oleic acid, etc. omega carbon is the last carbon opposite the c from the cooh group. Acetyle coa: name the three distinct mechanisms of the synthesis of fatty acids.
