Document Summary

Rationalisation: people create false excuses to justify unacceptable acts. Regression: a person adverts back to immature behaviours, this will happen more in children. Displacement: a powerful emotion (like anger) is redirected to a less threatening source. Ex: bullying aggressive impulses are put into petty acts. Patient would sit away and out of view from freud or therapist while they asked questions. Freud did not want the therapist to interrupt or distract the free thought of the patient. The person becomes aware of their unconscious desires (similar to repression) Catharsis explosive release of pent up energy. Transference during the therapy they will undercover childhood traumatic events with parents, teachers etc. and the patient would treat freud the same way. Ex: abused by dad, treats freud like dad. Catharsis and transference were critical for success and resistance was common. Resistance mad at freud for saying the truth". This would encourage freud that he was on the right path.
